About the role

The Lead Data Engineer is a key foundational role, reporting to the Manager, Data Warehouse and Engineering. You will lead the design and development of large-scale solutions, advising on database design and logic to support the delivery of WorkSafe’s Data and Analytics Strategy.

You will build complex infrastructure, operational processes, and infrastructure automation, creating and improving development and operational capabilities, including: disaster recovery, high systems availability, on demand scalable solutions, infrastructure monitoring and continuous deployment capabilities.

You will have significant input into the technical direction of the data team and will be significantly involved in strategy decisions. This role works closely with the Data Architect and existing technology teams, to improve WorkSafe’s data management.

  • Influence and lead design efforts for the most secure and scalable data environments that satisfy both operational and product needs in accordance with corporate guidelines
  • Influence and lead efforts and processes for continuous deployment cycles and on-demand deployments
  • Lead cross-departmental projects and project teams from conception to completion
  • Influence senior stakeholders through deep technical expertise, customer/domain knowledge, vision and objectives
  • Inform strategy and architecture through cutting edge research and industry best practice knowledge

Skills & experience

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline
  • Significant experience within Software Development, Data Engineering or a related field
  • Experience working in DevOps and Agile environments, as well as continuous integration
  • Depth of understanding in database design, including conceptualization to database optimization
  • Deep expertise in ETL development, data structures, storage, specifications, and architectures
  • Strong software engineering and coding skills, ideally in a data intensive environment
  • Excellent understanding of relevant applications like SAS, SQL, Enterprise R
  • Ability to conceive and portrait big data picture
  • Excellent understanding of Hadoop and Spark Able to lead meetings, clearly communicate technical approach, status, assess and mitigate risk
  • Excellent understanding of AWS cloud solutions including EMR/Spark/Scala
  • Excellent understanding of Snowflake.
  • Experience in building out Cloud based Data Lakes preferred.
